Experimental Research


Experimental research at the institute mainly focuses on meso and microscale phenomena. The life cycle of cold air lakes, the wind conditions in complex valley structures, thunderstorms and convective systems are examined. The focus is on the use of different measuring systems and technologies, whereby not only commercially available products but also increasingly proprietary developments are used.

 

 

The numerous meteorological instruments available at the institute make it possible to participate in international campaigns and projects such as ALPEX (Alpine Experiment), MAP (Mesoscale Alpine Program) and COPS (Convective Orographic Precipitation Study) as well as carrying out your own field experiments. The high level of expertise in the field of experimental meteorology is also passed on to the students with enthusiasm and continues to lead to collaborations, especially with business partners.

The instrumentation ranges from commercially available measuring systems such as SODAR-RASS, tethered balloon, theodolites, MMR, and discometers to numerous fully automatic weather stations to METLIFT.

METLIFT

This in-house development was realized as part of a project with HTL Waidhofen. The result is a measuring device that can automatically adjust the sensor height over a changing snow depth.
