StraitFlux
StraitFlux is an opern-source Python package developed by our group for the calculation and analysis of ocean transports from model and reanalysis data. Ocean models use a wide variety of grids that can be strongly distorted, particularly at high latitudes, making consistent transport calculations across ocean gateways and sections challenging. StraitFlux handles these different grid geometries automatically and performs transport calculations directly on the native model grid.
Key functionalities
- Volume, heat, salt, sea-ice and tracer transports across ocean sections
- Meridional heat and volume transport profiles as a function of latitude
- Vertical cross-sections of velocity, temperature, salinity and other tracers
- Meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in depth and density space
- Gyre and overturning decomposition of heat and salt transports
- Water-mass transport decomposition
StraitFlux provides diagnostics that go beyond total transports, allowing the contibutions of different circulation components to be investigated. The example below illustrates several of these diagnostics for the Atlantic Ocean and the OSNAP section.
